Carrara, the city of Tuscany
Carrara is a city and a commune in the province of Massa-Carrara in Tuscany, Italy. The city of Carrara is situated on the river Carrione and 100km from Florence. The area of Carrara was inhabited in the 9th century BC and later became a Roman settlement. After the ancient times in the Middle ages Carrara belonged to the Byzantine Empire. Later Carrara was the property of different great noble families of Italian duchies. It was also a center of revolutionary movement for the unification of Italy and a center of anarchist movement. Carrara is known as the place where International Federation of Anarchists was founded. Now the population of the city is about 65,000 people.
From the economic point of view Carrara is a large center of marble mining. Many ancient and middle age sculptures were curved from the Carrara marble. Among them are such famous pieces of art as Pantheon, Trajan's Column, Michelangelo's David. Marble is the main export item of Carrara and the main source of income. Here is held an international exhibition of stone and machinery called Carrara Marmotec.
Carrara is a very ancient settlement and managed to preserve a lot of historical monuments. Among the most significant attractions are the city Cathedral of the 12th century, Ducal Palace or Palazzo Cybo Malaspina of the 16th century. Now it hosts the Academy of Fine Arts. There also located such religious sites as Baroque church and convent of San Francesco, Church of the Suffragio, Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie alla Lugnola and Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
